The midday meal program at all the state run primary schools in Tamil Nadu consists of rice, lentils, and vegetables and is prepared using double fortified salt (DFS) containing iron and iodine. These two micronutrients are critical for mental and physical development and the encapsulation technology for adding both iodine and iron to salt was developed by the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) in collaboration with University of Toronto with support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the World Bank.
